Nehemiah Reinforced Soil Sdn Bhd, a specialist contractor with its core
expertise in the design and construction of reinforced soil retaining walls,
will be jointly-organizing the competition this year with INTI International
College Subang. It will be held on:

THE
CHALLENGE
Kampung Baru is a
heritage village located right in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. However, it is
prone to frequent flooding due to its proximity to Sg. Kelang.
Acknowledging the
threat to the continued existence of Kampung Baru, both the Malaysian Highway
Authority (LLM) and the Department of Irrigation and Drainage Malaysia (JPS)
have collaborated to design a permanent solution that entails the construction of a
dual-purpose structure that acts as a mitigation against flooding and also
supports a highway above it. The actual site condition is depicted by the cross
section attached.
You, as the engineer
for this project, have been tasked with the challenge to design a structural
solution that solves the flooding permanently and also functions as an embankment
for the construction of a world class highway. Your proposed solution must be
practical with emphasis on time and cost savings in view of the impending
monsoon season and also the space constraints in Kampung Baru. You are expected
to exercise your creativity and innovativeness to propose a holistic solution
that is both structurally sound and aesthetically pleasing by incorporating
‘green technology’ features.
The proposed solution
shall be presented in the form of a scale model measuring not larger than 1m
length x 0.5m width x 0.5m height complete with its technical specifications.
The cost for constructing the scale model should not exceed RM 200.00.
Each team is required
to also present their technical posters and/or multimedia presentation (2
minutes) at the exhibition booth. Maximum size of posters: No more than
two A1 size paper. Computer, projector and screen are not provided.
